Two local accountants have won prestigious awards from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

Tim Jackson, co-founder and partner of Tech Capital Partners, and Tim Rollins, director of corporate taxation with Research In Motion, were among 12 winners of the institute's Award of Distinction.

To be bestowed every three years, the award recognizes chartered accountants under 40 who have brought distinction "to themselves and their profession through leadership and achievement in their professional, community and personal lives," according a news release from the institute.

Jackson and Rollins will receive their awards at a ceremony Sept. 14 in Toronto.

Jackson, 38, gave early notice that he liked to mix work and volunteerism by serving with the student federation before graduating with his accounting degree from the University of Waterloo in 1991.

After working as an accountant in Toronto, he returned to Waterloo in 1998 to become chief financial officer of Pixstream, a startup specializing in video networking products.

In 2001, he negotiated the sale of Pixstream to Cisco Systems for $550 million. Since then he has worked as a partner in the venture capital firm, Tech Capital Partners, which he co-founded in 2001.

His community involvement includes serving as president of the board of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and chair of the Waterloo Public Library board.

Rollins, 34, graduated from UW with a masters of accounting in 1996. He worked at Ernst and Young in London, Ont., and Kitchener before joining RIM in 2001.

As director of corporate taxation, he oversees RIM's global tax function, ensuring it is aligned with the strategic direction and growth of the company.

His community activities include serving on the board of trustees of St. Mary's Hospital and assisting with UW's School of Accountancy and Master of Tax programs.

Jackson said he was "somewhat humbled" to receive the honour. He attributed his community work to being "exposed to a lot of other things in the community" while studying and working as an accountant.

Rollins said the recognition "is truly a reflection of the talent and quality of my colleagues and friends" at RIM, the St. Mary's board and the School of Accountancy.
