Tech Capital Partners lauded
Tech Capital Partners, a venture capital firm based in Waterloo, won the Impact Award for the technology sector presented at last night's Communitech annual meeting.
The firm's investments in early-stage companies has made an enormous contribution to the growth of the technology industry in the Waterloo region, said Iain Klugman, president of the organization.
This past summer, the firm announced its second venture capital fund that committed an additional $50 million from existing and new institutional investors.
"That is huge," Klugman said.
Meanwhile, the Entrepreneurs' Association, which was started by students at the University of Waterloo, also received an Impact Award for its contributions to fostering start-up technology companies in the region.
That organization now has about 500 student members from both the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, Klugman said.
"Their promotion of entrepreneurship has been truly exceptional," he added.
Individual awards for contributions to Communitech went to Randall Howard, one of the founders of the organization; Mike Stankowitsch of Sybase Inc., for his contributions to the peer-to-peer groups and Bill Waters of the firm We Create Inc., for providing the organization with web services.
